Gingerbread Recipe from BBC Good Food
Ingredients
For the gingerbread dough:
- 175g butter
- 175g light muscovado sugar
- 4 tbsp golden syrup
- 450g plain flour
- 2 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease and line 2 baking trays with baking parchment.
2. Put the butter, sugar and syrup in a pan and heat together until melted, stirring occasionally. Take off the heat and leave to cool slightly.
3. Put the flour, ginger, bicarbonate of soda and cinnamon in a bowl and stir together. Add the cooled butter mixture and eggs and mix to a soft dough.
4. Tip the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly until smooth. Roll out to about 5mm thick and cut out your gingerbread shapes using biscuit cutters.
5. Place on the baking trays and bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until golden. Leave to cool on the trays for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Serving Suggestions
Gingerbread makes for a delicious snack or dessert. Serve with a scoop of ice cream for a special treat, or decorate with icing and edible decorations for an extra special touch. Gingerbread also makes for an ideal gift – package in a cellophane bag and tie with ribbon for a homemade present.
